Tour Description

Please note that this is an optional extension tour, and it does not include cycling. Bikes will be securely stored off-site at our hotel in Mekele and collected again at the tour's end.

Danakil Depression is the sizzling hot Northernmost end of the Rift Valley. It is located way down under the high-plateau of its Western escarpment and few kilometers from the border of Eritrea. Danakil Depression is known as the hottest inhabited place on Earth. And with its 125 meters below sea level, it is among the lowest. Here the visitor will be introduced to a world so very different from its surroundings; we will visit some of natures geological wonders and enjoy an encounter with the tough Afar people who work here.

We visit the amazing sulphur lakes near Dalol and Ethiopia's permanently active volcano Erta Ale. And we will see the old salt mining sites and the salt caravans run by the Afar.

There are no hotels in Danakil. We camp out for the three nights. We sleep on traditional Afar beds and our trained chef prepares our meals.

Hiking is mostly limited to around the sulphur lakes of Dalol and a two hour hike from Erta Ale basecamp up to the volcano crater where we overnight and back the following morning. Alternatively this hike can be made on camel back.
